Once you have it slid up on the cam/crank, put a flat head screw driver into one of the lifter holes, and pry on the backside of one lobe to slide the cam forward and then tighten the bolt on the cam. Then you should have considerably less play.

The only thing I would caution on is that going too tight will ultimately lead to problems that are not performance related but reliability related.
