Usually portrayed as beautiful foxes with nine fluffy tails, the Huli Jing are magical creatures with a vast array of abilities. Various culture heroes have been said to have helped or saved humanity in many ways, such as stopping floods, teaching the use of fire, and so on. As mythic chronology is inherently nonlinear, with time being telescopically expanded or contracted, there are various contradictions.
