In order to get any speed faster than this, Ethernet is necessary. When Ethernet is used, you do not need a Verizon router at all unless you're getting Fios TV One. You can use any router you want. Connect the FiOS router to the living room coax, connect a wired computer to it, and try various coax cables at the splitter until you get an Internet connection. Do the experiment and report back.
